A MAN has divorced his ‘wife’ of one year over stealing a baby. Seventeen-year-old Betty Nakidde, who stole the baby from Masaka Hospital, said her husband Robert Bukenya, 23, a mechanic from Bumanji village in Kalangala had ended their relationship.

Nakidde had deceived Bukenya that she was pregnant and had been admitted to Masaka Hospital to deliver the baby. At the hospital, she stole the key to the incubator room and stole a baby belonging to Josephine Nakimuli.

Nakidde was examined and found not to have been pregnant and was mentally sound. She was almost lynched by the patients and attendants, but was rescued by the Police

Nakidde and her mother, Pastor Annet Nalubega have been detained in Masaka Central Police. She defended her mother who was innocently dragged in the case. “My mother did not know what I was up to. She just came attend to me in hospital.”

At the Police station, Nakidde asked for forgiveness saying she stole the baby because she did not want to lose her husband. “I had tried to conceive in vain and yet my husband was threatening to abandon me if things did not work out. That is why I stole the baby,” she said.

In an interesting twist, the Masaka OC/CID,T aban Chiriga said Bukenya would also face charges of defilement.
