Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has said that administrative wrangles have slowed down the delivery of services by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and has expressed optimism that this will not be the case come 2012.

Making the remarks at his office in Kampala on Friday, Lukwago said wrangles in the city administration in 2011 had slowed down activities that were meant to be covered, adding that services should be delivered by June.

“We assure the public that not much has been done in 2011 but 2012 will come with changes. The community should be part of the process of building the city,” Lukwago said.

Prioritizing

He also expressed fears said that some of the funds allocated to some sectors in KCCA have not been fully utilized as is required, and that the funds will be squandered if the budget is not revised to give priority to the public’s immediate needs.

“We need to give priority to our roads, the drainage system, and the taxi parks that are in a sorrow state and also to manage the ever-emerging potholes within the city,” Lukwago said in his New Year message.

He also warned the winners of contracts to manage the drainage systems and roads and that they should speed up the process to avoid more calamities that befall city dwellers in 2011.

Action

“We cannot continue to engross ourselves in administrative issues when our roads are bad. We are going to roll out new programmes. We cannot afford to see our people drown and suffer with the poor infrastructure, poor waste disposal in the city,” he emphasized.

‘’We need to act now.”

Lukwago said that with or without wrangles on the management of the parks, his office is going to embark on the exercise of repairing the three parks which include the New, Old and Nateete parks which are in bad shape.

The priority areas which the mayor wants to be handled as soon as the year start include the wrangles in the markets of Gaba, St. Balikuddembe, Kasubi among others. He also emphasized the need to have contractors of the Lubigi, and Nakivubo Channel complete by June.

He said that all the priority areas which need attention will be addressed during his first business committee meeting and authority meeting scheduled for January 6 and January 18, respectively.
