THE ordeal education minister Khiddu Makubuya faced on Tuesday evening did not prevent him from presiding over the party organised for the Reverend Father Damien Grimes.
“I refused to stay away from this party. I am the one who arranged it and I had to attend it regardless of what befell me this morning,” Makubuya, who with his wife were kidnapped on Tuesday night, said at the farewell party at Hotel Africana.
“It would not be an omission for the Ministry of Education not to honour Father Grimes because he brought enlightenment to many Ugandans. We are here to celebrate what we call human warmth, to celebrate logic and reason that Father Grimes exuded and passed on to his students,” Makubuya said.
Father Grimes’ education career in Uganda dates back to 1958 when he started off as a history teacher at Namilyango College after which he joined the then Kamuli College (later became Namasagali College) where he was headteacher from 1969 to 2000.
He then had a brief stint at Nkumba University where he was both chaplain and lecturer after he retired as headteacher of Namasagali.
Makubuya described Father Grimes as a man who motivated many Ugandans to excellence and pioneered the girl-child education.
State minister for primary education Namirembe Bitamazire said Fr. Grimes was the brain behind the Advanced Level section.
Fr. Grimes expressed his gratitude to the ministry for recognising his contribution to the sector.
