KAMPALA — A suspected gangster was shot dead and another arrested after Wembley operatives stormed their hideout in Muyenga, over the weekend. John Bingi, a mason, was gunned down as he attempted to escape during the raid after a tip-off by another suspect, Peter Kyambadde. However, three other suspected robbers managed to flee unscathed.

Treason case probe on
KAMPALA — Inquiries into alleged treasonable acts by two Teso politicians, a Civil Aviation Authority official and a retired UPDF Lieutenant, are still underway, court heard on Thursday. They were further remanded in Kigo Prison until February 28. “You have to renew your bail applications in the High Court,” Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Frank Nigel Othiembi said.


One killed in Gulu ambush
GULU — One person died and three others were injured, two of them critically, when their trailer was ambushed on Thursday evening in Cwero, Paicho sub-county. Kitgum resident district commissioner Lt. Santo Okot Lapolo identified the deceased as Isahia Oringa, the driver of the trailer UAB 448B. He was reportedly carrying cotton lint from Kitgum to Gulu.


Police burn illegal nets
KALANGALA — The marine police have burnt 59 fishing nets and impounded two tonnes of immature fish. The district criminal investigations department boss, Kassim Bagonza, recently told The New Vision that the operation was organised by the officer-in-charge of marine, Grace Tumwesigye. He said it took place at Kasensero landing site.

EC stops
MUKONO – The Electoral Commission chairman, Badru Kiggundu, has warned district and other local government officials in Mukono to desist from using government programmes to support candidates. He said this in a statement over the weekend. Two candidates, Ddamulira Kyeyune, the district vice-chairman, and Lukoya Mukoome, are vying for the seat.


UPC calls UN
KAMPALA – The Uganda People’s Congress recently called for involvement of the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) into Uganda’s dialogue for political pluralism. UPC chief James Rwanyarare said the Movement should not decide the fate of political parties.

Man held
MUKONO – The Police are holding a man accused of possessing 80 bullets and a UPDF army coat. Stephen Kalule, 20, was arrested last week after residents of Kitete village complained about his behaviour. The Police said said Kalule was being held in its cells as investigation continued.

Thembo says
KAMPALA – The Movement chairman Nyombi Thembo will not contest for re-election when his term expires in May. Thembo, now Kasanda South MP. told The New Vision he felt it morally unrealistic to contest for another term because of pressing obligations in Parliament but said he would continue mobilising support for the Movement.

Japan gives
LUWEERO – The Japanese government has given sh65m to Kiwoko Missionary Hospital to acquire solar power. The grant agreement was signed on Friday between the Japanese Charge d’Affaires, Tatsuya Miki, and the Kiwoko medical superintendant, Dr. Nicholas Wooding. Also present was the Luweero Triangle minister Tim Lwanga.

Bbaale case
KAMPALA – A magistrate’s court has issued a warrant of arrest for celebrated Uganda Television news anchor Francis Bbaale. He was accused of refusing to pay sh450,000 for jewellery he bought for his wife on Valentine’s Day in 1988 from Jit Gift Shop at the Grand Imperial Hotel.

Woman held
KAMPALA – A Muslim woman, who was recently accused of impersonating a nun with intent to obtain US$300 from a Catholic priest, was on Friday remanded at Luzira Prisons. Mariam Nakabuye, 22, of Bweyogerere allegedly went to Fr. Vedastus Kwajaba of Bweyogerere Catholic Parish and pretended to be Maria Mangaleti. Ends
