JOHANNESBURG - A measure of Kenyan footballing pride, battered in recent weeks by allegations of cheating at youth levels, was restored at the weekend as Nzoia Sugar scraped through to the first round of the African Champions League.
Nzoia Sugar narrowly won their preliminary round tie against Red Sea of Eritrea on a post-match penalty shootout after coming from two goals behind on aggregate following the first leg a fortnight ago.
A 2-0 win for the Kenyan club in Mumias on Saturday saw them draw level with their visitors on aggregate and force the match into the shootout. Midfielder Zackayo Kisekeli scored the vital penalty in the shootout, which Nzoia Sugar won 4-3.
The Kenyans now play defending champions Zamalek in the first round.
Nzoia Sugar are joined in the first round by seven other winners of preliminary round ties at the weekend, including the champions of neighbours Tanzania and Uganda.
Simba SC of Tanzania won 3-1 away at Botswana Defence Force XI to ensure their progress with a 4-1 aggregate triumph and set up an intriguing first round tie against Santos of South Africa.
Sports Club Villa of Uganda lost 1-0 away in the second leg of their preliminary round game against Muzinga of Burundi in Bujumbura but had a comfortable 4-1 lead from the first leg.
In Kigali, Rayon Sport lost 1-0 but advanced 3-2 on aggregate and face Esperance next.
Continental action in all three tournaments, the Champions League, the CAF Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup resume April 11-13.
Villa travel away to face Aviacao of Angola, Police going to Al Mehalla of Egypt in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
Express will the same weekend face Green Buffaloes of Zambia in the CAF Cup.
