Dr. Julius Muhumuza 29 from Ruhinda county Bushenyi does not deny joining the rebellion. Having qualified from Makerere University in 1999, Muhumuza had a brief stint with the army and Mildmay hospital on Entebbe Road.

“I joined the PRA through a contact called Joshua Katto from my district. He is a person I knew every well. In September 2001 he called me on my telephone. He told me that they had prepared their group and that I should go and help them,” he says.

Muhumuza is said to be an in law to Col. Mande. He joined UPDF training school in Kabamba. He was deployed in Bundibugyo but he deserted and joined Besigye in the presidential campaigns. His association with Besigye is said to have landed him in trouble.

“I was tired of this place. I wanted to leave because of post election harassment. It is a fact that I supported Besigye. By the time I fled to Rwanda I had a broken arm. I stayed in Rwanda until this year and we were flown to mid Congo and later driven to Kpandruma,” says Muhumuza. His regrets:”My time wasted.”

Muhumuza does not want to talk about his family. “This is my personal decision, do not involve my family,” he sounds a warning. He says all the recruitment was done with the consent of Rwanda government officials. Efforts to talk to his peers and family for some insight into his past proved futile.
