RESIDENTS of Soweto slum in Masese, Jinja Municipality where a low cost housing project is being initiated, have demanded that the Government compensates them for their land, buildings and crops before starting the scheme.
In a memorandum presented to the assistant commissioner for Human Settlement in the Works, Housing and Communications ministry, William Walaga on Friday, they said some of them were born in the area and had nowhere to go.
Walaga was accompanied to the area by Jinja mayor David Wakudumira, his deputy Bagole Kirimwita and area councillors.
The chairman of the group, Mwondha, said although the residents were grateful to the Government for its initiative to upgrade the slum, past experience from the neighbouring areas had taught them a lesson. Ends
