<b>‘Don’t tax’</b><br>NJERU — The town council chairman, Paul Musoke, has asked the Government to stop taxing gifts donated to disadvantaged people.

NJERU — The town council chairman, Paul Musoke, has asked the Government to stop taxing gifts donated to disadvantaged people. Musoke said this while handing over a wheelchair to Simon Kisame of Bugungu in the town council recently. He said such gifts were being held at Entebbe Airport due to failure by the beneficiaries to collect them because of high taxes levied on them.

BAT pledges
JINJA — The British American Tobacco (BAT) is to give sh75m to the municipal council for the management and improvement of garbage-dumping site in Masese village, Walukuba-Masese division. The deputy mayor, Bagoole Kirimwiita, while addressing Jinja central division councillors at Kakindu on Monday, said BAT would give the municipal council sh15m annually over a period of five years.

Police hold 9
SOROTI — The Police last week arrested nine students of Alliance High School for allegedly masterminding three separate riots in the town. The officer in charge of crime, Mr. Asubu, said the suspects would be charged with rioting. He said Alliance High School students had become a public nuisance in the town. “It is not the first time that these students are disturbing people in this town. We shall teach them a lesson,” Asubu said.

Teach K’jong
SOROTI — The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has urged the Government to educate the Karimojong nomads on how to take priorities. The district human rights officer, George Ofuyuru, said in an interview that Karimojong cattle were being sold to acquire guns. He said the cattle could have been better used as sources of food to alleviate the famine in the region.

Cleric urges
JINJA — Busoga Diocese retired bishop Cyprian Bamwoze has asked couples to exercise patience and avoid running after money and material possessions. “Marriage should not be guided by material possessions but must be on religious principles,” Bamwoze said at a requiem mass for Janet Lubuga Batuwa, wife of the Busoga Katukiro (Premier) at St. James Church on Monday.
