KAMPALA City Council (KCC) is about to forcifully pull down billboards that do not conform to its regulations. A May 31 deadline had been earlier set by KCC.

Hajji Amis Bireke, the chairman of the city billboards committee said yesterday, the billboards are to be removed at the cost of the advertising agencies. No compensation will be made.

Bireke, who is also the city secretary for works, physical planning and inspection said “May 31 was meant to indicate to any of the concerned parties who might contravene the regulations to take advantage of the warning and remove their billboard peacefully and carefully,” he said.

He added that, “Now we are sharpening our tools. We shall not reveal where we are starting from, but the culprits should know that they are at the mercy of KCC. If anything happens, that is there problem. The advertising agencies are aware of the deadline,” he said.

He appealed to companies to take note of the operation. Bireke revealed that some advertising companies never inform their clients about regulations concerning billboards.

“We do not deal with companies. We deal with advertising agencies. It has come to my attention that certain companies are not informed of the regulations. Time has come to act,” Bireke said.

Erection of billboards had become a thriving, but controversial activity.

The recommendations to pull down or deface billboards that do not meet the requirements were approved by the district executive at the time the ban on billboards was lifted.

The recommendations were made by Bireke’s committee which was appointed by Kampala Mayor John Ssebaana Kizito.
