THE Ministry of Works, Housing and Communications has demolished some Natete and Wakaliga houses built along the road ahead of the re-construction exercise.

The demolition, which started last week, is still on and will mainly affect structures constructed in the reserve of the heavily potholed city road.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Joseph Matovu told The New Vision on Monday that reconstruction of Wakaliga, a major city route, had started.

He confirmed the demolition, saying it was part of the reconstruction process.

Matovu said all the displaced had been paid. “Our engineers are the ones engaged in the demolition. That is government work. People have already been compensated and more are still picking their cheques,” he said.

Japan offered Uganda a US$2.6m (about sh49b) grant to reconstruct the 3.8km Natete-Wakaliga road in the outskirts of Kampala.

Konoike, a Japanese firm which improved the Natete, Nakawa and Wandegeya round abouts in Kampala, was contracted to do the work in seven months.

When The New Vision visited Natete and Wakaliga, the demolition exercise was still going on in some areas.

He said compensation will cost the Government sh3b. He, however, did not mention the number of families to be displaced.

Matovu said ministry surveyors were already on the road to start the work.

The project is the second phase of the Uganda-Japan agreement after the improvement of the three city round-abouts.
