GOLDEN girl Dorcus Inzikuru and golden boy Boniface Kiprop ran away with new national records after outstanding performances at the IAAF Super Grand Prix meet in Ostrava on Thursday night.
Inzikuru set the pace, finishing second in her first attempt at the 3,000m steeplechase and bringing up good memories when Uganda made her mark on th world in another specialists event, the 400m hurdles in 1972.
Inzikuru braved a topple and fall in the third last lap to finish second at 9 minutes 39.50 seconds, setting the first ever national time in the event. Belarus’ Alesye Turova won the race at 9:20.28 while Portugal’s Analia Rose finished 3rd at 9:49.62.
The 21-year old Inzikuru added the national steeple chase record on the 3000m (8:48.81) and 5000m (15:18.01). Adidas sponsored her to the event.
“There was no competition in the 3000m or 5000m and the only thing she could do is to compete in the steeple chase as a build up to her 5000m competition,” said her promoter Flavio Pasqalato moments after the race.
Upcoming star Bonifance Kiprop also set a new national 5000m record and also qualified for the IAAF world championships in Group A despite finishing 9th in the fastest 5000m race this year .
The qualifying time for the World Championship due in France is 13:21.50 for the group.
The blistering race was won by Kenyan Stephen Cherono (12:48.80), who beat Morocco’s Hicha El Guerrouj (12:50.24) to second place, Kiprop clocked 13:16.02 to shave off a whopping 18.82 seconds from the national record which was being held by elder brother Martin Toroitich(13:34.84). He also set a 3000m record of 7:47.92 in Turin last week.
“It is good he has qualified for the world meet. It will help give him more competition,” said his promoter Godfrey Nuwagaba.
