CASTLE Lager soccer Cup that brings together Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania is no more after the sponsors announced Tuesday it would not renew the three-year contract signed in 2000 in Nairobi.
The annual championship used to attract regional national teams and a guest nation.
Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa have featured in previous three editions of the event but without success.
Making the disclosure, the sponsors said the Castle Lager will instead take on a new and expanded direction aimed at bringing African football closer to the people.
The three East African nations will be among the 28 countries where a Castle Lager sponsored soccer news show — Pan Africa TV Soccer Show — which was launched on Tuesday will complement numerous football activities already undertaken by the brand.
The television initiative, which will be screened weekly, will be ready for airing in Kenya in the next couple of weeks. Lydia Murimi for South African Breweries said the Caste Lager Cup praised the three regional countries saying they exhibited its prowess in the game winning the cup against experienced nations in other parts of the continent.
She said many things to be unveiled soon are in the offing.
Castle Lager are sponsors of the 12 Nation-Cosafa Cup tournament and were broadcast sponsors of the 2002 World Cup, 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and are confirmed for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.
During the presentations, freelance photographer Mohammed Amin for The Daily Nation was named the best photojournalist.
The best English print journalist was Andrew Jackson Oryada of The Monitor, Uganda. Ibrahim Bakari of Tanzania's Mwananchi Newspapers won the best Swahili print journalistic award while the best Swahili Radio journalist award went to Philip Cyprian of Clouds FM Radio of Uganda.
Harambee Stars won last year's edition of the cup in Tanzania. Uganda won the inaugural cup in Nairobi with Tanzania clinching the second edition. Ends
