Four civilians, including an old woman, were on Saturday morning killed by a helicopter gunship at Achuna trading centre in Soroti district.

The victims were picking items abandoned by fleeing rebels when they were shot by the helicopter pursuing LRA rebels.

“We were picking some of the clothes which were abandoned by the fleeing rebels, when we saw the two gunships,” Moses Iyolit said from his hospital bed in Soroti referral hospital.

Iyolit, who sustained injuries on the left arm, said they took cover on shop verandas for safety.

He said his elder brother, John Adotu and Simon Olupot were killed in the attack.
UPDF 3rd division commander Col. Andrew Gutti said he was not informed about the deaths.

He, however, said the rebels had also developed the trick of hiding in abandoned houses whenever they heard the helicopters approaching.
