Eighty killed

ITURI — As a new transitional government was being sworn in the Democratic Republic of Congo, at least 80 civilians and warring militiamen from Lendu and Hema ethnic groups were killed in the Ituri region on Tuesday. Hema chief Mandro Panga Kahwa said the battle at Tchomia and Kasenyi on the shores of Lake Albert took eight hours, adding that his forces defeated the Kinshasa soldiers, Lendu militias and Mbusa Nyamwisi’s APC forces.

CMI holds 2

KAMPALA — The Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) has arrested two men suspected to have robbed a Uganda Television employee before severely beating him. They allegedly dumped Tom Bamuhiire on a garbage heap. Regional CID boss Moses Sakira yesterday said a Police patrol vehicle took Bamuhiire to the city mortuary, thinking he was dead.

Pool death

KAMPALA — The Police are investigating the death of a Sheraton Hotel employee, Wycliffe Ofwono, whose body was found floating in the hotel swimming pool on Sunday. Moses Sakira, the regional CID boss, yesterday said they would re-examine the case, earlier presumed to be drowning. The follow-up comes after revelations that hotel employees were barred from using the pool.

KAMPALA — The first ticket to win the sh180m Lotto jackpot was announced yesterday. The ticket number 28,23,20,30,31,22 and a bonus number 13 was one of the 14 tickets purchased yesterday morning from Roxy Video Library in Kamwokya. Uganda Lotto General manager, Lu Ruijun, said they would begin announcing the lucky numbers on radio stations to identify the lucky winner.
