THE government-sponsored Bar Course students at the Law Development Centre (LDC) are required to pay an additional sh1.2m per academic year, the House committee on legal and parliamentary affairs heard yesterday, reports John Kakande.

Elijah Wante, the LDC director, said the Government only contributes sh800,000 per year for each of the students doing a diploma in legal practice to qualify for enrolment as advocates.

“The Government does not fully sponsor the students,” he said. He was flanked by LDC chief accountant Joy Badebye and secretary Joyce Werikhe.

They appeared before the committee, chaired by Dora Byamukama, to explain the centre’s budget allocation and requirement for the financial year 2003/04.

Wante said LDC wanted to double the intake of the Government-sponsored Bar students from 200 to 400 in the coming academic year, which starts in October.

He said they had not yet got funding from the Government for the additional students.
He said if the Government does not increase the funds, many lawyers may not join LDC.
