MAKERERE University students have appealed to the university to open more accounts in other banks so as to reduce the queues at the two Stanbic Bank branches at the university campus and at Wandegeya.

Hundreds of students have been camping at the two branches in long queues since the new semester began.

“We are wasting a lot of time here and yet we are supposed to be attending lectures,” said Gertrude Tushabe, a development studies student.

Wandegeya branch manager Benon Bahemuka on Monday said the cash culture in Uganda is to blame for making the bank “a sort of market place.”

He said it would be easier if students had bank accounts in the bank.

The deputy academic registrar, Elisha Obera, urged students to use bank drafts instead of cash.

But some students said most banks charge more than 10% per draft, which they could not afford.
