The Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, yesterday said he was ready to serve as Chancellor of Makerere University.

The New Vision yesterday broke the news of Nsibambi’s appointment as the first Makerere University Chancellor who is not a seating head of state.

Nsibambi, who taught at Makerere for over 30 years before joining the Cabinet in 1996, said he would work to maintain the university’s high academic standards.

“I served it with relish and I enjoyed job satisfaction. Now it is my duty to assist this great university to ensure that its great standards are maintained,” he said.

Nsibambi was speaking at Kampala International Confe-rence Centre where he opened a meeting for the 22nd IGAD Council of Ministers.

He said as Prime Minister, his contribution to higher education would extend to other universities.
