A special investigation into the Uganda Police force salary section has unearthed hundreds of ghost officers who cost the Government millions of shillings.

The Police chief, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, told The New Vision early this week that the interesting part of the scam, genuine policemen and women were missing salaries while the ‘ghosts’ never missed.

“We are going to squarely deal with those responsible. The issue of genuine staff missing salaries will soon be a thing of the past,” he said while in Western Uganda on routine inspection of stations and other units.

Wamala said an officer in charge of a Mobile Police Patrol Unit had been netted in the scam.

The officer, Wamala said, had maintained 250 ‘ghosts’ on the payroll since 1998.

In another incident, an officer had panicked and erased about 500 names from the payroll when he heard detectives were going to his unit.

Meanwhile, Katumba said the Police Council had sacked three officers over indiscipline.
