THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has repossessed Kimaka airfield in Jinja and set aside sh245m for immediate repairs of its infrastructure to get it operational.

It has also availed sh 205 m for the repairs of Tororo airfield to have it reactivated.

CAA managing director Ambrose Akandonda said the repairs had been budgeted for and rehabilitation works would start before end of this year.

“The money is in our 2003/2004 budget and activities are to start in a month’s time,” Akandonda said on Saturday.

He took CAA board members for a tour of Kimaka airfield with Energy State Minister Daudi Migereko and Jinja Municipality officials led by their mayor David Wakudumira.

He revealed that CAA had a sh2.6b long-term development programme for Kimaka airfield that would start being implemented in the financial year 2008/2009 when it is already operational.

Migereko said the airfield built in 1954 to airlift workers and materials for construction of the Owen Falls Dam, would help develop the fish and tourism sectors.
