CRANES king-pin Sulaiman Tenywa has expressed his irritation with the ever-changing national team, saying it is like a chameleon that looks different each time you look at it.

The versatile US-based soccer player said Cranes need a consistent line up over a long period if they are to mature and conquer the continent.

“I am always playing with new faces in the national team, something that I feel isn’t right if our game is to improve,” said Tenywa yesterday. He returned earlier than the rest of the team that arrives today, and is expected to return to his club Dallas Burn today.

“You loose your old playing combination. It is always better that players are kept for at least five years,” he added.

The 26 year-old was part of a defence that included Argentine professional Ibrahim Sekajja, Abubaker Tabula and Phillip Obwiny that is supposed to be rock solid, but conceded three goals in Mauritius on Sunday.

Tenywa also blamed the penetration of the defence by the Mauritians to the diminishing size of Ugandan players. He urged technicians to look for players whose physical stature can intimidate.

“We simply could not compete well for the aerial balls and this gave the hosts an added advantage,” he said.

Tenywa, who was still chasing his return ticket with FUFA late yesterday, helped create the golden goal that pushed Uganda (4-3 on aggregate) to the group stages of the 2006 Nations Cup/World Cup qualifiers.

The draws will be held December 5 with the qualifiers starting next June.

* Africa’s World Cup qualifiers at the weekend featured several newcomers to the international arena who have already made an impact helping their countries to the next phase of the preliminary campaign.

Portuguese-based striker Cafu made a belated debut for the Cape Verde Islands on Sunday and scored twice in the island nation’s 3-0 win over Swaziland for a 4-1 on aggregate. The Boavista forward, who had turned down several past invitations to play for the country, delivered the opening two goals.

Jean Lomani, the leading scorer in the Zambian league, netted a second goal in as many matches for Rwanda as they saw off Namibia 4-1 on aggregate.

Lomani, a dreadlocked 21-year-old from Power Dynamos, scored in the 3-0 win in the first leg in Kigali last month.
