TOP seed Martin Dzuwa breezed into the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes tennis championships at Lugogo with a hard fought win over Uganda’s Chris Baagala yesterday.

The dreadlocked Zimbabwean won the first set 6-2 and was in charge in the next set leading 3-1 until both of his rackets snapped and the rain came down to disrupt play.

Baagala clawed back to level the score at 3-all after which he took a 5-4 lead before eventually collapsing to take the game to a tiebreak.

“I am enjoying my stay in the country and am really looking forward to winning the tournament but in tennis anything can happen,” Dzuwa said after his win.

“I have just won a tournament in Arusha, Tanzania and I am really focused on this one.”

In the other men’s games, seed six Patrick Olobo had it easy over Rwanda’s Eugene Karangwa with a straight sets win in 52 minutes.

Ultimate Security, Mosa Court Apartments, Icon International, The New Vision, Raps Uganda, Rwenzori Water, FedEx, Pepsi Cola and Appliance World sponsor the tournament that has attracted several regional stars. It concludes on Saturday.
