AS the Christmas season draws closer, the Violent Crimes Crack Unit (VCCU) is stepping up operations against armed gangsters.

The Police unit has arrested at least 11 suspected gunmen, among them a serving Policeman, an ex-cop and two UPDF deserters.
The VCCU chief, David Magara, on Thursday said his men had recovered 12 guns and 419 bullets.
Two of the guns were recovered in Iganga, one from Kibaale, two in Kumi and two from Mbale. One gun was recovered from Kisoro.

He recently told journalists at his Kampala office that Richard Enyeu, a Policemen, was arrested in Kisoro after his gang of five attempted to rob an early morning Jaguar bus near Kisoro airfield. Enyeu’s group, he said, fired at the bus and injured the driver.
“Investigations were carried out and it was found that Enyeu’s gun was used in the robbery,” he said.

Magara advised people shopping during the season not to travel with huge sums of money.
In another incident, VCCU arrested five people suspected to be conning foreigners through the internet.
“The frauds had also arrested people and extorted money from them. We are looking for their master called Lt. Masaba,” Magara said.

At least 12 suspected gunmen and burglars were shot dead last month. Over 24 others were prosecuted.
