TREE Talk, an affiliate project of the Straight Talk Foundation has won this year’s Elly Tibakanya environmental conservation award from Uganda Wildlife Clubs for its effort in promoting environmental awareness through tree planting.

The award given out every two years recognises individuals and institutions that exhibit outstanding performance in the field of wildlife and environmental conservation and protection. The award giving ceremony will take place on Thursday, December 11, at the Sheraton Hotel.

“This year’s award goes out to Tree-talk in recognition for its contribution towards effective environmental education and communication through its programmes, says Joel Musaasizi, Uganda Wildlife Club’s Programme Officer.

The award will also recognise Jane Biira, a student of Bulighisa Primary School from Kasese for her outstanding letter on the usefulness of trees and Kasese Cobalt Company limited for its environmental friendly practices.

Cathy Watson, Straight Talk’s communications director, expressed gratitude at receiving the award.

“We are proud to have won this award. We hope to do more in our efforts to improve environmental awareness,” she said.

Through its tree talk programme, Straight Talk foundation sends packets of tree seeds of different tree species and copies of Tree Talk newspapers to different primary and secondary schools in the country twice every year.

Watson said that 8000 new tree nurseries have been planted in different schools as a result of the Tree-Talk programme.

The award is named after Elly Africa Tibakanya, a former programme officer of Uganda Wildlife Clubs, who died in an accident while on duty.
