AFTER realising that he could not take a Hajji’s daughter in marriage because he was a christian, John gave himself an Islamic name to win Hajji’s approval.

John had been in love with Haj for two years when he decided to introduce himself to her father.

However, Haj reminded John that her father would not accept a non- Muslim son-in-law. But she advised him to use an Islamic name to dupe the father. John called himself Sulaiman and posed as a staunch Muslim.

On November 8, the Hajji gave away Haj in a colourful ceremony. The Hajji had in the past banished his two daughters who had married Catholics against his advice.

Now Haj is happily married and the dad is blissfully happy because he thinks his daughter has been more obedient than her elder sisters. It is becoming increasingly clear that the attitude of society about certain things has started changing otherwise the girls would not have taken their father for a ride.

The father should also have been flexible and respected his daughters’ choices.
