OVER 140 players are expected to participate in this weekend’s Kakira Sugar Golf Tournament that tees off on Saturday at the Jinja Golf Course near the source of River Nile.

OVER 140 players are expected to participate in this weekend’s Kakira Sugar Golf Tournament that tees off on Saturday at the Jinja Golf Course near the source of River Nile.
The two-day event dubbed ‘Kakira Open’ has attracted players from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania, according to Jim Mwine Kabeho, the chairman of Jinja Golf Club, the organisers.
Kabeho told journalists yesterday that Kakira Sugar Works (KSW) that are sponsoring the tournament for the third consecutive year have released sh25m to cover the event’s logistics.
“We thank the Madhvani Group and Kakira Sugar Works for their support towards sports in this country. We however ask other corporate companies to come in and sponsor sports events in up country areas. Jinja now has the best golf course and a conducive environment,†he said
The annual event on the Uganda Golf Union calendar has lined events for both the professional and amateur golfers. The professionals expected from Kampala include their captain Deo Akope, Hassan Mutawe and Dickson Lagoro.
Some of the professionals from Jinja include George Olayo, Dennis Anguyo and Brian Tollit, according to Kabeho.
According to the draws, Jinja players tee-off between 7.30am and 10am on Saturday while others will play from 10am onwards.
At stake are television sets, fridges, cookers, bags of sugar and a brand new tractor for a hole-in-one on hole 18.
Meanwhile, Kabeho assured the golfing fraternity that reports of Malaysian investors taking over the golf course was no longer a threat because its land title had been secured.
