THE Uganda Open tennis championship slated for February 17-22 has received a boost of sh50m from Uganda Breweries Limited. The tournament will run at the Lugogo Tennis Centre.

“This is wonderful for both the Uganda Lawn Tennis Association (ULTA) and Uganda Breweries. This kind of sponsorship shows we are on track to bring back the old days when this tournament was massive,” John Nagenda, chairman of ULTA said.

“The tournament will attract players now engaged in the prize money circuit in Burundi and Rwanda.”

The tournament will start with qualifiers to the main draw on February14-15.

The event is on a semi-professional status and is expected to attract players from Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Uganda.

“There is a strong possibility that a Uganda player can win this tournament. We have quite a few good players like Duncan Mugabe, Herbert Buyinza and others,” Nagenda expressed. “Its good to see big time tennis back and we are grateful to Uganda Breweries, and it is a sign of confidence they have in ULTA,” Nagenda added.

The men’s winner will walk away with sh1m while the ladies' winner walks away with more than 0.5m in prize money.

Meanwhile, Duncan Mugabe, Herbert Buyinza and John Oyet are taking part in the prize money circuit that is rolling on in Bujumbura and Kigali.

The trio will then switch attention to the Uganda Open after taking part in the circuit which has attracted a big entry from the East African region.

ULTAthis time opted not to include Uganda on the money circuit because they felt it had less impact on the association and would in the end prove costly.
