TWO-TIME Olympic boxing medalist Leo Rwabwogo will be honoured by the new Uganda Olympic Committee executive led by Roger Ddungu, reports Norman Katende.

Rwabwogo, who passed away last month, is the only Ugandan to have won two Olympic medals. As a flyweight boxer in 1968 he won a bronze at the Mexico games and added a silver in 1972 in Munich when Akii Bua won Uganda’s only gold medal to-date.

UOC secretary Peninah Kabenge yesterday revealed that a memorial service, which will double as a fundraising drive for Rwabwogo’s family, will take place at Lugogo on Feb. 14.

“We have lost many Olympians but we want to start a new chapter of honouring them," said Kabenge in reference to Rwabwogo who collapsed and died while tending to his garden in Rugongo village, Kabarole district at the age of 67.

Expected at the service are sports personalities, ministry officials, National Council of Sports and both Olympic and non-Olympic sportsmen and women.

“He won medals for Uganda and that is why we are inviting all sports lovers to be part of the service.”
