THE first event of the National Rally Championship calendar, the Mbarara rally, will be launched today at Horizon Bus terminal in Kampala.

According to the organisers, Mbarara Motor Club (MMC), the event slated for March 6-8 in the districts of Mbarara and Bushenyi, will see drivers make a repeat of last year’s route except one section that has been changed.

“It’s only the Itendero-Kabwohe section that has been changed, but the rest have stayed the same with same mileage,” said clerk of the course David Nsobya.

“Drivers will hit the Itendero-Kabwohe section in a reverse format, the start has replaced last year’s flying finish,” explained Nsobya.

The local rally governing body FMU sanctioned only the Mbarara Rally to take place ahead of the prestigious KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally due May 1-3.

This is to allow Ugandan drivers time to prepare for the continental event. Other events will take place at the Pearl rally.

The third African Rally Championship (ARC) round that will also double as the second NRC round is expected to attract drivers from Zambia, South African, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, among others.

Meanwhile 30 drivers have registered for the season opener - the CBS Premier Sprint due February 15 at Festino Cite in Mukono.
