TRAGEDY befell primary schools athletics championships in Namutumba district on Friday when a participant collapsed and died while leading in a 3000m race.

Denozio Muwaga, aged 16, from Nawangisa and a P6 pupil of Bunyagwe Primary School died during the final lap of his race at Nsinze Sub-County grounds.
An officiating official had just signalled the climax of the race when the son of Samson Buinza collapsed.

The Primary Six pupil died instantly according to the school headmaster Charles Kirunda. He said his pupil had not complained of any illness.

A postmortem at Nsinze Health Centre IV revealed that Muwaga suffered from a bout of malaria a week back, was anaemic and dehydrated which affected his blood circulation.

But the parents said they had not realised that their son was sick as he looked normal at home.

The district schools sports chief Fred Kalisengagha said Muwaga represented the district in last year’s schools competitions in Adjuman.

The Namutumba police chief George Wandera confirmed the death and asked the parents to bury the body.
