THE Special Revenue Protection Services (SRPS) enabled URA recover sh34.7b in revenue from 2000 to 2006, Police chief Kale Kayihura has said.

“We collect revenue on goods which would be smuggled and therefore, untaxed,” Kayihura, who is the former SRPS commander, said.

He was appearing before the parliamentary committee on commissions yesterday.

Kayihura said sh20.2b arose from taxes, fines and penalties for customs offences while sh14.5b was from domestic taxes.

He said the SRPS supported the agriculture ministry to fight fish smuggling. “As a consequence, especially beginning 2001, earnings from fish exports kept increasing from $27.8m in 1997 to $55.1m in 2004,” Kayihura told the committee chaired by Reagan Okumu (FDC).

He said in 2004, fish smugglers fled further south on Lake Victoria and settled on Migingo rock as a result of the crackdown on the illegal activities.
The Police chief noted that SRPS fought illegal timber dealing and helped to detect counterfeit drugs.

SRPS was established in 1999 to fight smuggling. It comprised of UPDF personnel and detectives from the Police.
