THE parliamentary committee on public service wants the plan to construct an official residence for the Vice-President dropped.

In a meeting on Monday the MPs said the matter was not a priority to government.

The committee was scrutinising the indicative budget of the Ministry of Local Government and that of the Ministry of Public Service for the financial year 2009/2010.

“We are tired of this house and there are more urgent matters to deal with,” said John Arumadri (FDC).

Johnson Malinga (Independent) asked: “For how long are we going to talk about this house?”

Committee chairperson Anthony Yiga said for eight years, Parliament had urged the Government to construct an official residence for the vice-president.

He said MPs even went and inspected some sites, but nothing came out of it.
“It should be forgotten so that we handle other priories,” said Yiga.

The MPs said the Vice-President, Gilbert Bukenya did not show any interest in the house.

The committee will meet the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Service, Henry Kajura, over the ministry budget.

The MPs resolved to ask the Minister of Local Government, Adolf Mwesige, to submit a list of the proposed seven new districts.

The legislators questioned why the ministry intended to allocate funds before the districts were approved by Parliament.

The committee also resolved to follow up the issue of pension arrears after reports that unscrupulous people were fleecing pensioners of large amounts of their pension and gratuity.

The conmen, according to MPs, have formed entities that process pension for desperate pensioners in a short time.

Yiga said the pensioners sometimes ended up forfeiting more than half of their money to the unscrupulous people.
