THE lives of tuberculosis (TB) patients in Bushenyi might be at risk following the district councillors’ refusal to approve the supplementary budget to purchase TB drugs.

During a meeting on Saturday, district secretary for finance Nazarious Akambikira’s motion to approve a supplementary budget of sh19m for the TB programme was turned down.

Akambikira said the district recently received funds from the health ministry to implement TB programmes.

But the councillors said the executive committee and the technical staff did not follow the procedures and regulations as the health and education committee that was supposed to discuss the allocation of the funds was not consulted.

The issue was suspended and referred to the relevant committees for discussion. District director of health services Dr. Celestine Barigye said it was unfortunate that the councillors did not recognise the need for saving lives.
