MTN Heathens did their arch-rivals uganda telecom Kobs a massive favour on Saturday by halting G4S Pirates and helping revive their chances of retaining the Super 8 rugby league title.

With the likes of 32-year-old Robert Seguya playing with the pace and power of a 20-year-old, Heathens’ vastly experienced squad neutralised an agile Pirates side that fell 25-14.

Heathens’ near-perfect ball handling and pin-point passing made the difference as the Kyadondo side penetrated and made all four tries from the wings.

Pirates seemed to close in on Heathens early in the second half when they cut the deficit to 13-7 but the 2005 champions raced to a humbling 25-14 win.

Heathens now lead the table with 55 points, three ahead of Kobs who beat Mongers in Entebbe. Pirates are still at 50 points.

With the Pirates down and virtually out of contention, the rugby fraternity will end the season with a classic between Heathens and Kobs at Kampala Club this weekend.

Kobs must win the game to capture a fourth league title in a row while Heathens could still become champions with a draw.

Kobs’ coach Geoffrey Maboga believes Heathens and Pirates have handed the title back to his side.

“We were mad with ourselves for losing to Pirates but we recovered quickly. They have sort of played in our hands,” Maboga remarked.

“How fortunes can change? I am very happy Pirates are out of it as they spoilt our party last week. At the time we seemed out of it I wished some other team could win it but not Pirates.”
