A total of 15 bombs, including landmines and grenades, have been detonated in Kasese district. The explosives were discovered in various parts of the Rwenzori Mountains.

They are suspected to have been abandoned by the Allied Democratic Forces. The seven-day operation that kicked off on August 3, was organised by the Anti-Mines Network and conducted by a team from the National Mine Action Programme.

“One of the explosives was at the edge of Kalingwe Primary School playground. God is great that for the years it was there, it did not hit the children,” Wilson Bwambale, the Anti-Mines Network coordinator said on Tuesday.

Two years ago, two pupils died at Kyondo sub-county in Bukonzo East, when a grenade exploded as they played in their school compound.

Bwambale said two bombs were found five meters from a grave at Bulemba in Ihandiro sub-county. People had on several occasions visited the graveyard.

Other bombs were discovered at Kalingwe trading centre and on paths leading to the trading centre in the mountains, Bwambale said.

He added that eight grenades and 12 bullets were discovered at Rusese in Bwera sub-county.

Bwambale said the team had failed to access an area they suspected to have bombs because of a herd of elephants that had camped the place.

The area is on the bank of River Nyamughasana in the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

“The rebels used to camp at the place during their poaching sprees in the park. The place is dangerous to the wildlife animals and the rangers,” he warned.
