SIX girls from Kampala made it to the grand finale of the Miss Uganda 2009 pageant after the first auditions were held at the Kampala Imperial Royale Hotel on Saturday.

To attain this coveted feat, the girls shook off competition from over 70 enthusiastic contestants who turned up for the auditions. The lucky six are Caroline Nantumbwe, 23; Grace Kiwanuka, 23; Tina Atim, 20; Agnes Atim, 23; Joan Atiem, 18 and Brenda Ibbara, 21.

These will join eight others from the regional auditions which, due to time constraints, will be held at Imperial Royale Hotel this Saturday.

Miss Uganda UK winner Maria Namiro will also contest, making 15 finalists in the grand finale on September 26, at the Imperial Royale Hotel.

The judges’ criteria for qualification put into consideration self-possession, body shape and intelligence, among other factors. Specific reference was made to one’s potential to represent Uganda at the Miss World contest.

The team of judges was led by the Miss Uganda for Miss World 2009 director, Joyce Church. Others were Sarah Nyamwenge and Richard ‘Flava’ Sebadduka, who has a wide experience in beauty pageants. At the same event, eight boys were selected to contest in this year’s Mr. Uganda.

The Miss Uganda team cancelled the other auditions that were supposed to be held in Fort Portal, Masaka, Mbale, Lira, Mbarara, Gulu and Arua districts after Church’s father reportedly fell ill.

“Unfortunately, we now have to first fly back to London before we continue with the auditions,” Joyce Church disclosed on Saturday.

Contestants from other regions were asked to turn up for the final auditions at the Imperial Royale Hotel this Saturday.
