THE One Village One Product programme that is expected to boost the Prosperity-for-All project and other anti-poverty initiatives has been launched.

Modeled on the Japanese lines, where it originated in the late 70s, the programme is expected to boost household income through value addition.

Japanese lines is a programme that enabled Japanese villages specialise in the development of a particular resource.

Under the programme, a community identifies a resource in which it has an advantage and develops it through value addition, creativity and improved skills through training.

It is hoped that the programme, being piloted in the three districts of Bushenyi, Masaka and Soroti, will raise productivity, develop markets and create employment.

Speaking at the function, health minister Steven Mallinga, who represented the Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, said: “A key element of the poverty reduction strategy is to assist the poor to raise their household income and thereby lift themselves out of poverty.”

He lauded the Japanese government for supporting the programme.

Mallinga noted that although Africa was endowed with natural resources, it was the least industrialised and needed programmes to transform its economies.

The Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, Keiichi Kato, said Uganda would benefit a lot from the programme if it is properly implemented.

“What is needed is to identify resources that are unique and can compete locally and internationally,” Kato said.

Tourism state minister Serapio Rukundo said: “The programme was a unique approach to local development,”.

He added that villages and regions would be transformed into economically vibrant entities through the utilisation of local resources, value addition, increased employment opportunities and market development locally and internationally.
