The Uganda-Sudan border at Afoji in Moyo district that was closed on Monday by demonstrating residents has been re-opened.

John Abingwa, the resident district commissioner, said the stones and logs that had been used as barricades had by been moved from the road by 9:00am.

“Business between the two countries has resumed normally and there is no cause for alarm.”

Abingwa, however, said many Sudanese-owned shops were still closed because the owners feared that their property would be looted.

The conflict escalated on Monday when Sudanese soldiers chased away Ugandan farmers from Gwere in Lefori sub-county, accusing them of trespass.

The Ugandans also accused the Sudanese wildlife authority of occupying about five kilometres of Dufile animal sanctuary, at the border with Mangwi county in Eastern Equatoria region.

The row nearly turned violent on Wednesday when Moyo residents protested the occupation and threatened to harm Sudanese settlers.

Information and national guidance minister Kabakumba Masiko yesterday denied media reports that there was tension at the border.
