THE recent remark by Dr. Olara Otunnu that the massive killing in Acholi was caused by President Yoweri Museveni is totally wrong. There are two people known for butchering the Acholi and the Langi in cold blood. These two killers were Idi Amin and Joseph Kony.

When Amin toppled the Uganda People’s Congress government in 1971, the main agenda of work was to exterminate the Acholi and Langi. Museveni at the time was an employee in the president’s office as assistant secretary in charge of research. He fled the country soon after the coup.

He openly confesses that he did not want to waste time to work under Amin.
Otunnu at the time of the coup was waiting for S6 examination results. He joined Makerere University in July 1971. In 1972 he was elected guild president.

On a talk-show on Radio Uganda and Uganda Television, Otunnu, made a bitter remark about Amin concerning the expulsion of Asians and the killing of the Acholi and Langi. Wanume Kibedi was the moderator of the programme.
To everybody who was listening at the time, the remarks by Otunnu meant he was going to be killed.

A few hours after the talk-show Makerere was full of army men looking for Otunnu, but being small in body size he managed to escape. My brilliant Gulu High School classmate Otunnu should know better. He should know that large number of Acholi and Langi were killed by Amin.

Another person who ruthlessly killed his tribes mates is Joseph Kony. He made his tribe homeless. To date Kony is still butchering hundreds of fellow Africans outside Uganda.

Without Museveni’s strong leadership and command in the army, the tribe called Acholi would be on the verge of non-existence. Museveni should be credited for protecting the daughters and sons of Acholi land. Soon after the NRM took power in 1986, other tribes started burning the Acholi and Langi people with vehicle tyres. But the President came out strongly, protesting the act that could have divided the country further.

Otunnu, if you researched, you will come to the conclusion that Museveni is not an enemy of the Acholi and the Langi. Time will come when you will realise that Museveni has actually been our saviour.
