ASK THE EXPERTS

I am a Senior six student taking History, Economics, Geography and Luganda (HEG/Lu). My family is not that well-to-do. So if I fail to get a Government scholarship, I may not have a chance to join Makerere University on the private sponsorship scheme. What options should I try in case this happens?

After A’level, there are a number of study scholarship opportunities you can harness.

But, even before you search for such opportunities, the Government scholarships are not limited for universities only.

Ismael Mulindwa, the principal education officer in the education ministry, says if you fail to get a Government scholarship to university education, pursue a diploma.

There are other public tertiary institutions. These are National Teachers Colleges (NTCs) for teaching-related diplomas and the Uganda Colleges of Commerce (UCCs) for business-related courses.

NTCs pass out Grade Five teachers. In the Ugandan education system, such teachers teach O’level. There are five NTCs in the country, admitting about 3,000 students every year. These include Muni NTC in Arua district, Kabale NTC in Kabale, Unyama in Gulu, Nagongera NTC in Tororo and Mubende NTC.

Two principal passes is all it takes for you to apply. Information from the ministry indicates that privately sponsored students pay sh325,000 per term. Government students pay a subsidised fee between sh150,000 and sh250,000.

All NTCs have courses that suit your subject combination. A diploma in education can secure you a job. Uganda has two UCCs: Tororo UCC and Kabale UCC. These pass out diploma holders majoring in Business courses, such as: Uganda Diploma in Business Studies (UDBS) Marketing, Accountancy, Secretarial courses and Book Keeping. For admission, you are required to perform well in Economics.

The cutoff points required for admission are never fixed, but are lower than those required at university level.

Nsubuga says after getting a diploma, you could join any university through the mature age entry scheme.

Ensure that your education soars above everything as you prepare for the exam. If work hard, you may scoop a Government scholarship.

There are other public universities with lower cut-off points that admit students on Government scholarship. These are Kyambogo, Busitema, Mbarara and Gulu universities. Give them a try. In addition to this, there are two ways of getting a government scholarship: the direct entry scheme where 3,000 students are taken and the district quota system where 10 students are taken from each district. This requires that you work hard.

But, remember men only hit what they aim at. Therefore, though you may think it is hard to get a Government scholarship, you had better aim at something higher.

When progress is looking for a partner, it does not turn to those who believe they are only average. While revising and answering exams, do not seek the average, because then you will only work to avoid failure.

Fagil Mandy, an education consultant, also advises you to convince yourself that it is not a curse to grow in a poor family. Amid school fees hardships, he says, many children of the poor have toiled and made it to the top. Motivate yourself everyday. You too, can make it.
