EDITOR—On Thursday, Phoebe Tamusuza Wabwire wrote a letter entitled “Corruption at Mulago Hospital”.
She narrates her ordeal at the Family Planning Clinic in graphic detail. She is able to identify the nurse who mistreated her and yet blames the entire hospital of corruption!

The complaint must be seen and judged in the context in which Mulago Hospital operates. We see more than 2,000 out- patients everyday and there are more than 2,000 in-patients on any one day.

The workforce at Mulago is 2,300 employees of various cadres excluding those that belong to the College of Health Sciences and other training institutions in the complex. It is possible for one of our staff to behave unethically.
Management is trying its best to weed out such bad apples in our workforce but we need the support of the public to identify them.

We request Phoebe and others not satisfied with the way service is delivered to them, to let us know through the following telephone numbers: Public Relations Officer 0772-671907, Security 0772-635913, Senior Principal Nursing Officer 0772-336266.

We shall be able to identify the health worker or support staff who has mis behaved and take corrective action. We shall let you know what action has been taken in writing or other means of communication that may be appropriate.

There are also suggestion boxes where complaints or commendations can be lodged. We wish to thank all our patients who have patronised our services.

Let us all work together to improve the services at the hospital through constructive rather than destructive criticism. As we correct errant behaviour, let us not demonise the entire health profession.

Dr. Edward Ddumba
Senior Consultant Physician
Executive Director, Mulago Hospital
