THE MTN-FUBA basketball play-offs took an ugly stage Saturday night as UCU Lady Canons petitioned the technical committee accusing the referees and time keepers’ of foul play, reports Johnson Were.

With 22 seconds to go and UCU leading 58-57, time keepers stopped the clock after A1 Challenge coach called for a time out. The referees did not award the time-out leaving the game to flow.

UCU claims this gave A1 an opportunity to score the winning basket in their 59-58 victory. According to the petition filed, Lady Canons want the committee to nullify the result and re-fix the match.

“We were winning this game. In basketball any second has an impact on the outcome of the game, something has to be done,” UCU captain Lauren Akinyi charged.

FUBA official Sunday Manano said the matter will be heard and a decision taken before Wednesday. In the men’s category Warriors were 89-74 winners over Falcons.

Steve Okias, Ronnie Kasewu and Abdullah Ramathan scored 21, 16 and 12 points respectively for Warriors while Steven Omony and Sam Obol managed 20 and 14 points for Falcons respectively.
“We lost consistence and diverted from our game plan that is why we lost,” Falcons’ Henry Malinga said after the game.

“We are going back to the drawing board. It’s too early to rule us out of the finals with four games remaining,” Malinga added.

The play-offs continue on Wednesday at YMCA Wandegeya with Falcons playing Warriors and Lady Canons facing A1 in the second play-off games.

UCU Royals beat Nkumba Beepers 10-0 to emerge champions of the first edition of the Falcons Mountain Dew University basketball Challenge hosted at UCU Mukono over the weekend.

Mountain Dew brand manager Timothy Luzinda handed over the trophies and prizes to the winners.

Ndejje, Makerere, Kyambogo, Nkumba and hosts UCU participated in the inaugural edition.
