THE Police have said the Democratic Party spokesperson, Betty Nambooze, was free to travel to South Africa for medical treatment.

Nambooze had been bed-ridden at Mukono Health Centre since September, complaining of intestinal pain.

She missed her flight to South Africa after Entebbe Airport staff blocked her.
“It was not the Police that blocked her, she was lacking some documents,” the deputy Police Spokesperson, Richard Musisi, said yesterday.

Nambooze said after going through all the security checks at the airport, she was approached by a lady who claimed she was concerned about the slow pace with which she was walking.

“The lady inquired whether I was unwell. I replied I was sick and going for treatment. She said they could not take me because there was a form I had not filled and my doctor needed to endorse,” Nambooze narrated.

Nambooze, a member of Buganda civic education committee, said on her way to Kampala she received a telephone call that she was needed at the Police.

In company of her lawyer, Erias Lukwago, she went to CID headquarters at Kibuli but the Police told her she was not needed.

Musisi, however, described Nambooze’s visit as casual. “She passed by to report that she was around, you know she has been sick. Nobody has arrested her. She is at home and free,” he explained.

Nambooze has been on Police’s wanted list since riots broke out in Buganda on September 10. However, Police were unable to arrest her due to illness.
