A traffic officer attached to Fort Portal police Station has been arrested over extorting sh300,000 from a driver. Richard Munno, 39, a resident of Kitumba in Fort Portal municipality, was arrested on Tuesday at 11:00am at the Mpanga market container area on the Fort Portal-Kampala road.

Munno allegedly asked for sh500,000 from Michael Owori, a driver of the Uganda Revenue Authority. Munno had arrested Owori after his car knocked another on the Fort Portal-Kampala road.

Owori is said to have paid sh300,000 to Munno and promised to pay the rest later. But he instead tipped the Police, which advised him to photocopy the notes he was to give to Munno.

When Munno realised he had been watched as he received the balance, he fled and hid in a nearby trench.

The western region police spokesperson, Elly Matte, said the money was found in the trench where Munno was hiding and the serial numbers corresponded with the photocopies.
