<b>Man jailed for defilement</b><br>JINJA-A man was on Friday sentenced to eight years of imprisonment for defiling a minor. Court heard that Kima Ssebo, 76, a resident of Kakira town, defiled a 12-year-old pupil on August 17, 2006, at his home.

JINJA-A man was on Friday sentenced to eight years of imprisonment for defiling a minor. Court heard that Kima Ssebo, 76, a resident of Kakira town, defiled a 12-year-old pupil on August 17, 2006, at his home. The court, presided over by Justice Benjamin Kabitto, further heard that on the fateful day, Ssebo grabbed the girl at around 7:30pm on her way to buy soap. Her blood-stained knickers were recovered from Ssebo’s bedroom.

Area gets climate gear
MOROTO-Karamoja region has received climatic change detection equipment that will help send signals of imminent droughts. The equipment included generators and computers. The Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development officer, Isaac Obai, handed over the equipment on Friday. He said early warning would enable the farmers prepare for the climate changes.

Municipal bid frustrated
IGANGA-Efforts by the town council to annex Bulamagi sub-county in order to attain a municipal status have been frustrated. Bulamagi LC3 chairman Abdullah Balunywa said: “They wanted us to join them so as to get the mandatory 100,000 people required in a municipality. But when we set conditions, they failed to meet them. One of our worries was security of people’s land as council is known for grabbing land.”

314 miss PLE this year
BUGIRI-A total of 314 pupils failed to sit for the just-concluded Primary Leaving Examinations this year, 182 of whom were females. The district inspector of schools, Kawo Nayi Kawere, recently said Nambo, Gorofa, Nangalama, Nabirere and Bulesa primary schools registered the highest number of dropouts. Last year, 305 out of 6,497 pupils missed the exams. Kawere said early marriages, petty businesses and the high defilement rates caused the dropouts.
