CALM returned to Makerere University after it emerged that sh50m had been approved for the teams to participate in inter-university games over which students rioted on Tuesday.

The games are slated for December 18-23 at Nkumba University. Makerere tutor Peninah Kabenge said their budget was slashed down from sh87m to sh50m.

“They had earlier declined to fund us but we appealed and the budget was just cut. Sportsmen and women were aware and they were not part of the rioters.

Those involved in the chaos were not sports people. We will operate with the agreed money,” Kabenge said.
Makerere is set to defend the overall title they won two years ago.

Students had protested the university’s decision to skip the bi-annual event.
“We received the students’ complaints on Monday. We were in a meeting over the matter when the strike began. They did not give us time to respond,” said university publicist Gilbert Kadilo.

Fourteen institutions have confirmed participation in the MTN sponsored event that is expected to host close to 20000 athletes.
