THE Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has unveiled the logo for the 2012 population and housing census. The deputy executive director, Paul Mungyereza, explained that the logo sums up all the activities they will carry out in the census.

“The map of Uganda in green signifies growth, the house and people indicate the households and people who will be counted and the incomplete ellipse around the logo indicates that everybody must be counted,” Mungyereza said on Wednesday.

This was at celebrations to mark the Africa Statistics Day at the Kapchorwa Boma ground.
“The slogan ‘together we count’ signifies that we are all important and must be counted and the theme beneath the logo, ‘Counting for Planning and Improved Service Delivery’ sums up the relevance of the exercise,” he added.

Mungyereza said the logo, theme and slogan were designed by Michael Opanda, a former student of Makerere University, through a competitive process.

“Field mapping has been initiated. A total of 20 districts have already been mapped out while eight more are still remaining. The national census preparations take long because they cover every household in the country,” Mungyereza said.

Mapping involves dividing the country into smaller administrative units and locating key features such as schools, major water points and mountains.

In a speech read by the information and communications technology (ICT) minister, Aggrey Awori, President Yoweri Museveni said the application of statistics in monitoring service delivery and planning had contributed to and sustained economic growth.

Museveni said the outcome of the census should enable the Government to address the high population growth rate and environmental degradation in the country.
