MEMBERS of Mahyoro Rice Farmers Association in Kamwenge district may earn over sh800m from this season’s harvest.

“The rice farmers in Mahyoro are expecting to harvest at least 400 tonnes this season and sell it in a processed form at sh2,200 per kilogramme,” Eriah Mugisha, the in-charge of Mahyoro Rural Information Centre, said recently.

This was during an inspection tour of the rice fields in Mahyoro by the Sasakawa Africa Association team led by the country director, Dr. Sarah Ossiya, and Kamwenge district officials led by the LC5 chairman, Edward Musingye.

The association chairman, Hannington Mugarura, said residents had realised that they could get out of poverty faster through rice-growing than sticking only to traditional crops like coffee and bananas.

“We now have machines to process our rice so that we can earn more money. We thank Sasakawa Africa Association for the support,” Mugarura said.

Ossiya hailed the farmers for responding to the advice from her organisation.

The district chairperson also promised more support to the farmers through the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS).
