RELIGIOUS leaders have called for the reduction of electricity tariffs to encourage the use of clean energy to reduce the effects of climate change.

They also urged the Government to publicise environmental impact assessment reports carried out in oil-producing areas.

The leaders, at the closure of a three-day retreat at Imperial resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe on Friday, resolved to mobilise and educate people on tree planting, and to promote the use of energy saving stoves and technologies. The retreat was organised by the Uganda Joint Christian Council.

Present were Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi (Church of Uganda), Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga (Catholic Church), Pr. Dr. John Kakembo (Seventh Day Adventist), Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga (Orthodox Church) and deputy Mufti Abdul Mukiibi (Muslims).

The state minister for higher education, Mwesigwa Rukutana, commended the religious groups for uniting to tackle social challenges and urged them to bury their differences.
