VETERAN sports administrator Alex Hamala is dead. Hamala, 72, a long time serving games master at Kololo SS, passed away at Mulago Hospital on Monday.

Fondly referred as ‘Senior’ for his leadership qualities, Hamala was a founding member of the UTV/UCB Cup, a secondary schools soccer tournament he helped transform from the 1970s to what is the Copa Coca-Cola Cup now.

Because of his endearing abilities, Hamala has been a member of the event organising committee since 1993. He was also a member of the Uganda Schools Sports Association.

COPA Coca-Cola organising committee chairman Raphael Bwire described the late as an unsung hero in sports.

“It is very sad to lose such a resourceful elder. As chairman welfare this is a man who would wake up early and sleep late for the good of everybody,” Bwire mourned yesterday.

Under his tutelage at Kololo, Hamala groomed most of Uganda’s old and new generations of football greats like John ‘Ross’ Latigo, Peter Mazinga, Jackson Mayanja, Angelo Lonyesi, Wilber Musika and Emma Okwi.

There will be a requiem mass at Kamwokya COU at 10am today. Burial will take place tomorrow at Masafu, Busia.
