SOMETIMES, it is common to visit a friend’s home and you are captivated by the glamourous exterior and interior it poses, but when you go to the toilet, its appearance turns you numb and frozen in disbelief, it is a total mess.

The word toilet, is derived from the French word, toilette, which is closely linked to the concept of sanitation and cleanliness. This implies that if one’s toilet is messy, giving it a facelift is crucial.

There are different synonyms for the toilet; it can be called washrooms, lavatories and the Japanese call it plainly as Benjo. In East Africa, the Kiswahili dialect for the toilet is choo.

Ronald Otim, a psychologist, explains that toilets are called places of convenience because they are supposed to comfortably enable one urinate and pay that natural call.

He says if one does not pay nature’s call with ease, the toilet loses the vitality of being a place of convenience.

“It is the toilet that exposes your hygienic or unhygienic condition.”
Therefore, it should be given the same attention just like lawns, ceilings, or wall fences.

Suzana Clare, an interior designer, says since a day cannot end without one visiting the toilet, it is necessary that it appears inviting.

Having a clean toilet, she says, influences the user to leave it clean. Clare adds that during the process of building, it is advisable for builders to compliment the toilet with materials like tiles since they are easy to clean.
“Air fresheners should always be sprayed regularly to create that warm invitation for the users.”

She concludes that in a bid to radically complete the toilet décor, one should also use accessories such as chandeliers and well blended colour paints.
